The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) seeks a
Project Director for Science in the Classroom (SitC) to plan, direct, and
implement activities of project(s) including managing financial and staff
resources in order to raise awareness and participation of the overall
program.

Major duties and responsibilities

- Conceptualizes content and plans and implements program activities for
Science in the Classroom (SitC). Oversees daily operations and develops and
monitors program budgets
- Supervises professional and support staff (one visiting scholar, one
Research Associate, with the potential for an expanding staff) including
assigning work, monitoring work progress, providing training, conducting
performance reviews, and recommending changes in staff salaries
- Solicits input from and work with advisers in terms of the long term
direction of SitC
- Oversees work done with consultants and vendors
- Works with evaluators on impact issues
- Reviews and edits science content for inclusion in SitC resources
(multi-disciplinary papers across many different fields of science) and for
additional science resources related to EHR projects
- Develops strategies for serving needs of different target populations
interacting with SitC, e.g., educators (high school, 2-year colleges, those
teaching non-majors), graduate students, post-docs
- Conceptualizes and may organize meetings, conferences, and symposia,
delivers seminars and conducts other community outreach activities to
explain project issues and increase public awareness and understanding of
issues, attends and presents at scientific meetings
- Develops proposals for program funding from federal and private sector
organizations, interacts with funders and potential funders
- Remains current on the education research literature related to SitC
and relevant AAAS education efforts. May be asked to summarize recent
education research for conferences, seminars, and other writing
opportunities
- Initiates design and development of new projects, including
identifying and securing grant funding and integrating projects into the
larger vision of EHR
- Reviews and evaluates effectiveness of projects in coordination with
other Directorate projects and programs
- Develops partnerships with other organizations undertaking related work
- In collaboration with fellow Program Directors and Directorate Head,
may formulate policy for project(s). Stays abreast of project issues and
serves as advocate for project or program issues at professional,
governmental, and community meetings and hearings
- May oversee and direct multiple projects
- Depending on program, position may have national or international scope

Minimum requirements

- Position requires advanced university or college training leading to a
PhD degree in a STEM discipline
- Five to seven years’ experience in progressively responsible positions
in program development and management
- Two to three years’ experience supervising others
- Demonstrated knowledge of project issues and research, including an
understanding of the related research literature; project management skills
including grant proposal development, budget management, and personnel
management; ability to use independent judgment to make decisions and guide
project effectively and efficiently
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
