Call for Abstract: Chemical Information Literacy: Innovation, Collaboration, and Assessment

Dear Colleagues,

This is a call for abstracts for a symposium on Chemical Information Literacy: Innovation, Collaboration, and Assessment which will take place at the American Chemical Society National Meeting in New Orleans, Louisiana, March 18-22, 2018.

We welcome diverse perspectives from chemistry educators, librarians, information specialists, and students to share their research and stories, especially collaborative effort across campus.

Symposium title: Chemical Information Literacy: Innovation, Collaboration, and Assessment

Symposium abstract:

CINF and CHED invite chemistry librarians and instructors to share how they are successfully supporting the development of chemical information literacy for the next generation of chemists, from one-shot assignments to deeper integration into entire courses and curricula. We welcome topics such as:

  • Assessing the effectiveness of chemical information literacy instruction.
  • Using best practices for instructional design.  
  • Mapping information literacy through the curriculum.
  • Integrating popular and emerging instructional technologies into the curriculum.
  • Building new collaborations between librarians and instructors.
  • Integrating new areas of chemical information (e.g. data information literacy, cheminformatics etc.).
  • Exploring interfaces with scholarly communication topics (e.g. research impact, author identity and rights, ethics etc.)
  • Creating assignments or activities to meet current standards, including the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy,  Information Competencies for Chemistry Undergraduates (SLA Chemistry Division/ACS Division of Chemical Information), and ACS Guidelines for Bachelor’s Degree Programs (ACS Committee on Professional Training).
