Applications are currently being reviewed for the inaugural 2023 Chemistry Education Research and Practice Gordon Research Seminar (GRS) as well as the 2023 Chemistry Education Research and Practice Gordon Research Conference (GRC)! Seminar and Conference Descriptions
The GRS is a 2-day conference (July 8-9, 2023) specifically for early-career scientists that directly precedes the GRC (July 9-14, 2023); the GRS is designed specifically for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars to network and develop future collaborations, as well as to provide mentoring and professional development opportunities. Unique to the GRS is that all oral presentations are selected from submitted abstracts. This process makes the conference tailored to the interests of the early-career scientist community. As Chairs, we are interested in showcasing work aligned with the GRS theme: Research Contexts, Questions and Methodologies Across Chemistry Teaching and Learning Contexts.
The GRC (July 9-14, 2023) is open to scholars from all career levels, and has the theme of Coordinating the Production and Consumption of Knowledge on Chemistry Teaching and Learning. We strongly encourage interested graduate students and postdocs to apply to both the GRS and the GRC. Both the GRS and the GRC will be held at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. In addition to research talks and poster presentations, the GRS will also feature a mentoring session where early career researchers can interact with experts and field leaders on topics such as mentoring, managing identities, job searching, and networking at conferences.
Application decisions for the GRS will be made largely on a first-come, first-serve basis. However, to be considered for an oral presentation, applications are due by January 9.
For the GRC, application review begins in mid-December. Applicants engaged in research and/or scholarly teaching (instruction informed by theory and evidence and evaluated) who submit complete poster titles and abstracts will be prioritized.
While the formal deadline to apply to participate in either the GRS or GRC is June 10, 2023, both the GRS and GRC chairs will be working to coordinate application acceptances starting in late January. Additionally, we are applying for funding to help defray participant costs of attending the GRS. Depending on the result of the funding application, we will start allocating funds for accepted participants by early May. Please note: Under "Activities" in the application, please explain your research interests and stage in your career, as well as why you would like to attend the GRS and/or GRC.

All GRS attendees and GRC conferees are expected to submit abstracts to present their research (typically during poster sessions). Graduate students and postdoctoral researchers are welcome to present the same poster at both the GRS and GRC. You can submit an application at any time and update your abstract at a later date. Unique to the GRS, however, is that speakers are chosen from submitted abstracts. To be considered for an oral presentation at the GRS, complete abstracts must be submitted by January 9, 2023. All attendees accepted but not chosen for an oral presentation will participate in a poster session.
