MSU invites applications for a tenure system faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with a focus on Chemistry Education Research. The successful candidate will hold a PhD in chemistry, chemistry education, or a closely related discipline, and will have demonstrated innovative teaching and a student-centered perspective on undergraduate education. They will also have demonstrated the ability to carry out forefront research while successfully maintaining teaching responsibilities as commensurate to their career stage. The appointment will be split between the Lyman Briggs College (75%) and the Department of Chemistry (25%) in the College of Natural Sciences. The position expectation is 60% teaching, 30% research, and 10% service.
This position will add to the five tenure system faculty who started in the college during August 2022 and who focus on Discipline-Based Educational Research in Physics, Mathematics, and Biology. This group of hires bolsters existing strengths and supports the launch of exciting new programs and initiatives focused upon scholarship in disciplinary educational research and DEI&B: diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. This new chemistry hire will join these and the rest of the vibrant community of discipline-based researchers across the MSU campus to promote equitable innovation and educate the future generations.
Founded in 1967, LBC is a vibrant undergraduate residential college within MSU focusing on the study of the sciences in their societal and global contexts (https://lbc.msu.edu/about/strategic-plan.html). The LBC curriculum integrates the natural sciences and mathematics with the history, philosophy, sociology, and communication of the sciences. There are approximately 2,000 students in Lyman Briggs, 66% of whom are women. 31% of all primary, secondary degree, and additional majors identify as students of an underrepresented racial/ethnic group. Additionally, 32% of LBC students are members of the MSU Honors College. Faculty work closely with students in small classes. LBC is also a leading center for research on teaching and learning and for interdisciplinary scholarship. Most LBC faculty members in the tenure system have a joint appointment in a disciplinary department or program to support their scholarship and professional development. The college boasts a dynamic community of students, staff, and faculty who make LBC an exceptional place to learn and work.
Michigan State's Chemistry Department has a rich tradition in both chemistry research and education. The department has almost 50 tenured/tenure track faculty members and fifteen academic specialists, over 200 graduate students and 200 chemistry majors. Research areas include chemistry education research, as well as a wide range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary research. The chemistry department is undertaking significant faculty hiring in the next several years to build on current strengths and expand into emerging areas of chemistry. In addition, there are exciting campus wide research initiatives on interdisciplinary science education research.
