The Department of Chemistry at the University of British Columbia invites applications for the position of Chemistry Education Specialist (CES). This position is part time (50%) at the M&P educational programming level B. The successful applicant will join a team of faculty, staff, and students developing an innovative pedagogical method and online tool for improving students' discipline-specific decision-making skills through scenario-based learning. This project, funded by UBC's Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund, aims to advance student learning by (1) enhancing the online tool (called Alchemy) for greater versatility and capability in teaching/learning; (2) developing new pedagogical content; and (3) implementing learning analytics capabilities to guide teaching/learning through metrics of class and individual student performance and attitudes. The CES will lead the evaluation of the project outcomes, play a coordinating role as the project expands to include courses across the Faculty of Science, and provide supervision in the form of content and pedagogical expertise to undergraduate students assisting with scenario development. Candidates should have a graduate degree in a physical science or engineering discipline, or graduate degree in an education field with an emphasis on science education, evaluation or measurement, or curriculum & pedagogy. The successful candidate will have excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and a strong personal commitment to science education. Familiarity with current pedagogical research at the post-secondary level is desirable. Experience in developing educational materials or curriculum, online teaching, and project management will be considered assets. Knowledge of undergraduate chemistry content is an asset. This appointment is for one year initially, and may be renewable for two additional years. The appointment will be made at the M&P educational programming level B. This position is subject to final budgetary approval. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
