Postdoctoral Fellow position in Science Education at Western Michigan University

The Mallinson Institute for Science Education (MISE) at Western Michigan University (WMU) seeks a postdoctoral fellow to join our department as part of an institutional initiative to support a cohort of 3-4 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Post-Graduate Fellows. Cohort members will be engaged in professional development activities and individual mentorship aligned with their future career goals. The MISE fellow will teach one undergraduate science course each year (mentored by a MISE faculty member), co-teach one MISE PhD course in science education (mentored by a MISE faculty member), and engage in science education research focused on equity and inclusion. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Chemistry (at least a master’s degree), but other science disciplines will be considered.

Aligned with Western Michigan University’s Mission so “That All May Learn” and its Strategic Plan 2022-32 centering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Objectives that are responsive to both its campus, regional, and national demographics, this Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Post-Graduate Fellows Opportunity is a reflection of WMU’s commitment to “actively create and continuously invest in building an inclusive and equitable environment where every member of our community feels like they belong and has access to the resources they need to thrive”. The successful applicant will join a cohort of 3-4 postdoctoral fellows in multiple disciplines engaged in professional activities to foster institutional equity and inclusion efforts at WMU and beyond. Initial appointment will be for one year, with the potential to continue for a second year.

Research responsibilities are negotiable. The supervising faculty (see below) all have rich research programs focused on institutional change and broadening participation in the sciences, with multiple ongoing and recently completed externally funded projects that are available for the fellow to work on. We also welcome a fellow to bring their ongoing research or work with us to develop new research projects.

Supervising faculty are:

-Dr. Charles Henderson, Distinguished University Professor of Physics and Science Education, and Director of the Mallinson Institute for Science Education

-Dr. Megan Kowalske, Associate Professor of Chemistry and Science Education, and Chair of the Chemistry Department

-Dr. Heather Petcovic, Professor of Geological and Environmental Sciences and Science Education, and Chair of the Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences

Starting date is negotiable, with preference given to candidates who can start by Summer 2024. A PhD in Science Education, Chemistry Education, Geoscience Education, Physics Education, or a related field is required to be completed by the starting date.
