Postdoctoral Position in Chemical Education - UC San Diego

The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego anticipates hiring a postdoctoral fellow in the area of chemical education. This position is subject to budget approval.

The successful candidate will work with faculty and staff comprising the General Chemistry Curriculum Committee (GCCC) to establish an integrated set of learning objectives for the general chemistry laboratory courses; to develop and implement inquiry-based experiments and valid assessments of student learning in these courses; and to disseminate these efforts through scholarly publications and lesson plans for internal use.

The postdoctoral fellow will be supervised by Drs. Thomas Bussey and Stacey Brydges, and will be responsible for collaborating with members of the GCCC to design, develop, and implement evidence-based general chemistry laboratory curricula that aligns with the topics taught in the general chemistry lecture courses. The postdoctoral fellow will also participate in TA training and mentoring, delivering laboratory lectures, and overseeing laboratory sessions, and will also serve as instructor of record for one academic quarter.

Applicants should have completed a PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Education, or a related field, have demonstrated excellence in teaching, and have familiarity with emerging pedagogical trends and developments, particularly regarding laboratory learning, issues related to diversity and inclusion, and assessment techniques. The successful candidate must have excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, and be interested in advancing educational innovations to improve the preparation and persistence of diverse student populations in the STEM disciplines.

The initial appointment will be for one year.

Salary: Commensurate with qualification and based on UCSD Postdoc salary scale

Projected start date: Start date is negotiable. Position available as early as Fall 2017.
