Best,

Minjung

The chemistry department of University of Illinois at Chicago has an immediate opening for a postdoctoral position. The postdoctoral scholar will join a research team led by Dr. Minjung Ryu (Chemistry Department and Learning Sciences Research Institute) and contribute to two research projects. The first project is Professional development for K-12 science teachers in linguistically diverse classrooms. This project aims to create, implement, and study professional development to facilitate science teaching and learning in linguistically diverse high school science classrooms. The project utilizes the Lesson Study model that engages teachers in ongoing collaborative workshop sessions with colleagues and the project team. The second project is Designing linguistically responsive environments in college STEM education. This project seeks to examine lived experiences of students of non-dominant linguistic backgrounds in college STEM learning settings and design a learning environment that supports their participation, learning, and career development. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, research activities of both projects will be largely online in the foreseeable future and will be re-adjusted throughout the year depending on public health recommendations and reopening plans of schools and colleges.

The successful applicant will play a key role in project management, implementation, and dissemination in both projects. Duties include collecting and analyzing qualitative data, developing and implementing professional development, presenting project findings at regional, national, and international meetings, and writing manuscripts for publications.

A successful candidate is required to have:

  • PhD in chemistry education, science education, or learning sciences
  • Knowledge and expertise in one or more science subject area
  • Teaching experiences in K-12 schools
  • Extensive experiences in qualitative research

Individuals with following experiences and expertise will be particularly preferred:

  • Teaching at high school level
  • Video-based research techniques using video analysis software
  • Practice-based teacher professional development (in particular, lesson study)
  • Remote/online teaching
  • Proficiency in two or more languages
  • Teaching and conducting research in linguistically diverse learning environments
  • Advanced academic writing skills

To apply, please send 1) a letter of application that describes your background, research interests, and qualifications, 2) a curriculum vitae, 3) a sample of scholarly writing, and 4) names of three references to Dr. Ryu (mjryu@uic.edu) via email. Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. The start date is negotiable, but a candidate who can start sooner than later will be preferred. The initial duration of this position will be one year, and it can be extended up to another year, contingent upon satisfactory accomplishment of duties. Questions about this position and application process can be sent to Minjung Ryu at mjryu@uic.edu.
