A multidisciplinary team of faculty at Michigan State University invites applications for a discipline-based education Postdoctoral Research Associate in causal mechanistic reasoning across chemistry and biology. The Research Associate will join an established collaboration between faculty from chemistry, biochemistry, plant biology, and teacher education seeking to understand how undergraduates connect ideas to create causal mechanistic explanations across chemistry and biology. The Research Associate will work with faculty mentors Jon Stoltzfus, Melanie Cooper, Tammy Long, and Christina Schwarz to develop and answer questions in this research area using existing data sets and codebooks as well as new data generated by faculty learning communities, student responses to research tasks, student interviews, and/or student focus groups.

Primary responsibilities will include: 1) Coding student responses from an existing data set using existing codebooks and analyzing results to answer questions regarding how students construct causal mechanistic explanations across chemistry and biology. 2) Coordinate collaborations between multidisciplinary teams of instructors to iterate and improve formative and summative course assessments based on student responses to those assessments. 3) Dissemination of the above work via peer-reviewed publication and presentation at national meetings.

The applicant should have completed (or anticipate completion of) a doctoral degree in biology or chemistry related fields, education research, or curriculum development. Excellent writing and organizational skills and experience with mixed methods research are required. In addition, the successful candidate will have experience with a mix of some set of the following areas, enabling them to make unique contributions to the research team:

* chemistry or biology education research

* assessment of student learning

* curriculum development

* mentoring undergraduate researchers

* presenting and publishing research findings

The position has a flexible start date but ideally will start no later than August, 2022. The salary is commensurate with education and experience, and the appointment will be on an annual basis with the possibility for renewal/reappointment contingent on a successful performance and funding availability.
