A research-associate position is available at the University of Utah in the Department of Chemistry with my group. This position is a full-time, 12-month position, with an initial one-year appointment, with possibility of re-appointment, contingent on satisfactory
performance, project scope, and availability of funds.
Description of Position Responsibilities
The associate will join a team of researchers, practitioners, and faculty developers engaged in the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project (ISTP; https://www.inclusivestemteaching.org/), which consists of online course with activities, virtual affinity groups, and local learning communities, and is designed to increase the awareness, self-efficacy, and ability of STEM faculty and future faculty to cultivate inclusive learning environments and to develop as reflective practitioners. ISTP is funded via a multi-institutional NSF grant.
The primary responsibilities of the research associate under this NSF grant are to conduct quantitative and qualitative research on the outcomes of participants engaged in the ISTP project. This will entail extensive literature review, validation and implementation of instruments, and quantitative data analysis. It will also involve qualitative methods such as interviews, case studies, and course-material analysis. In addition, the associate will be expected to be a key contributor to the writing of the research manuscripts.
This work will be performed under the mentorship and supervision of a sub-group of expert education researchers who are part of the grant team.
Applications are welcomed immediately with review beginning Sept 30, 2022 and continuing until the position is filled. The targeted start date is flexible between Oct 15 and Dec 30, 2022. The position requires being in residence at Utah.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. in STEM education research or in science education with a strong focus on undergraduate STEM education or in a field with strong STEM education research experience. In addition, they will have demonstrated experience in conducting research studies in undergraduate STEM education or STEM faculty development. Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential, which will enable them to assist in the writing of manuscripts and to interact with faculty and research personnel at various levels (faculty, staff, and undergraduate and graduate students). Excellent organizational skills, especially the ability to coordinate and manage multiple simultaneous research projects, are necessary.
In addition, knowledge of and experience in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion is preferred. To be considered, applicants must be strongly committed to undergraduate STEM education and improving inclusion and equity in the STEM classroom. Applicants must have the skills for and interest in working collaboratively with a wide range of people in higher education.
