Position Description: The School of Arts and Sciences. Rutgers University is seeking a full-time non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor. This is a calendar year appointment. The position will report directly to the Director of the Math & Science Learning Center. The primary responsibilities will be to oversee the outreach and diversity programs offered through the Math & Science Learning Center, including the Rutgers Science Explorer and Geology Museum; this position will also serve as Director of the Rutgers Science Explorer program. This position is responsible for development and implementation of all program initiatives, strategic planning, development of programs and curriculum, assessment, development of funding proposals and budget management, and policy development and implementation. This position will recruit, hire, and train graduate teaching fellows, provide mentorship for teaching fellows and other program participants, and develop, coordinate, and participate in outreach training and ongoing professional development for graduate teaching fellows. This position collaborates with outreach coordinators from other programs and museums to develop joint programming, with faculty and staff in related departments to develop new programs, and with museum volunteers and K12 teachers to coordinate programming. This position develops and implements programming to support diversity in graduate and undergraduate programs, and participates in other initiatives as directed. Teaching responsibilities will include one course per year on a topic related to the faculty member's interests and job responsibilities.
Requirements: Ed.D. or Ph.D. in a STEM discipline or Science Education. Requires a minimum of 4 years experience in developing, presenting and supervising K12 outreach programs in the STEM disciplines, including knowledge and experience in working with underserved populations. The successful applicant must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of K12 curriculum and culture, pedagogy and informal science education. Successful applicants should also have experience in collaborating with faculty, students and staff to develop programming, providing professional development activities for graduate and undergraduate students and developing funding proposals.
Overview: The Rutgers Math and Science Learning Center, including the Rutgers Science Explorer (a mobile science lab serving middle school students) and the Geology Museum, supports and provides a focal point for STEM education and outreach programs. The MSLC provides outreach programs to the general public, K12 students, and teachers, promotes collaboration among outreach programs across the university, and fosters the development of programming which brings together the educational expertise and rich array of research initiatives of faculty and graduate students in the STEM disciplines. As a site for undergraduate STEM education, the MSLC supports research-based educational support activities, including course transformations and development of innovative courses, providing facilities and a central space to bring faculty with an interest in innovative teaching together. In both undergraduate and outreach activities, the MSLC develops programming to broaden participation in the STEM disciplines, especially of female and underrepresented minority students.
