Dear CER Colleagues,
Following a 2018 BCCE Symposium titled “Supporting the Growth & Impact of the Chemistry Education Research Community “ (see list of talks from this symposium below), we co-authored a commentary in JCE related to growing the Chemistry Education Research field (doi: 10.1021/acs.jchemed.8b00823). We offered that commentary as a conversation starter. In the spirit of continuing that conversation, we would like to plan and organize a Part II Symposium for the 2020 BCCE. Based on feedback we have received, we have identified a few topics as possible to be included in that symposium:
- Forming communities of practice – what are or should be the norms and standards for research and practice in our field?
- Forging international collaborations – how does the work in our field get shaped through international partnerships?
- Drawing from practices of other DBER – how do other STEM ed research fields inform the work we do?
- Communicating and disseminating our work in conferences and publications – what are or should be the norms and standards for reporting and sharing the results of our research?
- Posting and applying for CER positions – what should people be looking for when applying for a CER position and what should institutions be expecting from a CER position?
- Extending CER outward from academia -- how do partnerships with industry, informal venues, etc. nuance our work?
Do these topics resonate with you? Are there others you would propose to be included? If you are interested in sharing feedback for that symposium, please respond to the survey in this google link: (https://forms.gle/6ArjRiEf1bs25FT59)
