Briefly:
The role is collaborative and requires working in partnership with faculty, staff, and teaching assistants to deliver a high-quality educational experience to ECU students; safety-minded by ensuring all environmental health and laboratory regulations are carefully followed; conscientious by conserving chemicals and reagents to maximize budgetary resources; and a dedicated leader, providing mentorship and encouragement to all emerging scientists.
The department has a strong history of high-quality teaching and mentoring, is recognized with numerous teaching awards, and has a strong profile in professional development, workforce development, and best educational practices. While the position’s primary duties will be instructional, and excellence in teaching is expected, synergy with one or more key research, service, or educational missions of the department is also expected. ECU Chemistry is already an innovative department that utilizes the Argument-Driven Inquiry instructional (ADI) model in the general and organic chemistry labs and offers multiple sections of Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs). In addition to the above-mentioned ADI and CUREs, the department has multiple initiatives to enhance accessibility and student success for our student body. The department utilizes Undergraduate Learning Assistants and Undergraduate Teaching Assistants, shown to improve attitudes towards science, presentation skills and content knowledge. The department has moved to the Chemistry, Life, the Universe and Everything (CLUE) curriculum, shown to impact student success. A Distinguished Professor in the department has made broader community outreach a focus of her efforts.
