The University of Oregon has an opening for a NTTF Career Instructor position in the areas of Introductory Chemistry, General Chemistry, and or Organic Chemistry. This is a long-term career position with the expectation of promotion to Senior Instructor II. We have a dedicated group of faculty members who are committed to making improvements to undergraduate science and mathematics education. The University of Oregon Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry seeks applications for a Career Instructor position. Teaching responsibilities will include but are not limited to: lecture and laboratory instruction in Introductory and General Chemistry. Depending on interest and expertise, there may also be opportunities to teach Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Instrumental Analysis. The Instructor will participate in curriculum development and review, laboratory course development and review, and other department and college-wide activities. This position may require remote or online teaching. The Instructor will be responsible for providing weekly supervision and observation of graduate employee teaching assistants (GTAs), weekly professional development sessions, and for the evaluation of the GTAs teaching and performance of duties. The Instructor is expected to use inclusive teaching practices and create learning environments where all students have the opportunity to be successful. The Instructor is also expected to engage in campus and regional or national professional development activities to keep up with the discipline and as a path to continuous improvement in implementation of effective pedagogy and chemistry content understanding. This is a career non-tenure track, nine-month, position at 1.0 FTE. Summer employment opportunities may also be available.
Minimum Requirements* Master’s degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Education, or a related field* One academic year of relevant college-level teaching experience, including evidence of very good or excellent teaching of chemistry.
Professional Competencies* Demonstrated abilities using an LMS such as Canvas and online homework systems such as Sapling* Ability to deliver informative and engaging instruction with incorporation of active learning techniques and effective pedagogies* Ability to deliver professional, inclusive, engaged, and research-informed teaching at the college level (see https://teaching.uoregon.edu/resources/teaching-excellence)* Commitment to the academic success of a diverse student population* Ability to manage a general chemistry program with diplomacy* Ability to develop and implement instructional modules in the classroom and laboratory based on effective pedagogies* Ability to develop and implement online chemistry courses* Commitment to undergraduate education, strong pedagogical skills, and demonstrated abilities in curriculum planning and instructional design* Team player and communicator.
Preferred Qualifications* Ph.D. in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Chemical Education* More extensive college chemistry teaching experience and expertise in chemical education* One academic year of involvement of supervising teaching assistants* Experience in teaching chemistry in a large lecture (300-500 seat) format* Experience in teaching using an active learning environment* Experience in inclusive learning pedagogies* Record of participation in teaching and learning workshops and seminars, presentations of chemistry education papers or posters at regional and national meetings and conferences.
