The following email was shared with the Division Executive committee and the cahir agreed to pass it along to this listserv. This is agreat opportunty for CER to have a voice in NSF future funding plans regarding STEM Education.

I hope that you are happily and peacefully entering into this holiday season.

The Chair Succession recently received an email about an opportunity to participate in an NSF STEM Education Advisory Panel. We wanted to pass this information along to you (see below) in case (1) you are interested in self-nominating and (2) you are willing to broadly advertise this opportunity to others who would make excellent contributions to this project in the name of chemistry education. Please note that the deadline for any nomination is November 30, 2017.

Subject: NSF STEM Education Advisory Panel Opportunity - nominations due November 30, 2017

Dear UPAB:

As you know, ACS aims to provide high quality chemical information and communicate chemistry’s value to policymakers. In accordance with these goals, ACS staff in the External Affairs & Communication Office has brought to my attention an opportunity for ACS members to nominate themselves to serve on a federal advisory committee that will provide advice and input to government STEM education programs.

The National Science Foundation has announced the creation of the STEM Education Advisory Panel, which will advise CoSTEM, a committee of federal science agencies representatives, as that group updates the federal STEM education 5-year strategic plan.

If you are interested and feel you are well qualified to serve in this capacity based on the description on the NSF web site, we encourage you to self-nominate for this advisory panel. Nominations are due by November 30, 2017.

Federal advisory committees give advice, feedback, and recommendations to federal agency staff. They are comprised of specifically qualified individuals and provide a source of outside guidance that reflects the concerns of relevant stakeholders. Members of advisory committees are considered Special Government Employees (SGEs) and must comply with conflict of interest rules; however, they stay in their current positions with their employers and only convene on a few occasions per year.

Persons interested in being considered for appointment to the STEM Education Advisory Panel should send

· Your name and affiliation

· curriculum vita

· an expression of your interest in serving, stating how your expertise will enhance the Advisory Panel’s areas of responsibility

· Your contact information, including employment address, telephone number, FAX number, and email address.

· Nominations should be sent to Nafeesa Owens at stemedadvisory@nsf.gov by November 30, 2017.

If you submit a nomination, consider sharing that information with the ACS External Affairs & Communications Office as ACS staff will be monitoring the process and will share further information as it becomes available. Additionally, please feel free to share this information with any colleagues whom you think will be interested and qualify for this opportunity.
