Project: The overall goal of REALISE is to create an environment in Radford’s Biology, Chemistry and Physics departments that is student-ready, welcoming and inclusive by embedding project-based learning into the curricula. In its second year, REALISE is encouraging individuals to collaborate, experiment, innovate and improve the student experience in for Radford’s STEM majors. Through the REALISE faculty learning community, faculty participate in a variety of professional development opportunities to learn best-practices for creating an inclusive classroom environment and embedding project-based learning into the classroom. REALISE also mentors a team of twelve student peer role models who work to create an inclusive and welcoming student environment by organizing social events and creating student success materials. Through the first two years of support from REALISE, eight chemistry faculty have joined the REALISE faculty learning community. As a result, the Department of Chemistry has already revamped the general chemistry laboratory experiments and improved the student experience in organic chemistry by clearly articulating learning objectives with our students.
Position: The postdoctoral fellow will have (1) full-time teaching responsibilities in General Chemistry (12 classroom contact hours per week), (2) contribute to continuing course redesign efforts, (3) participate in the REALISE faculty learning communities and serve on the REALISE leadership team. Examples of REALISE leadership team responsibilities include contributing to our efforts to clearly communicate the goals and outcomes of the REALISE project, mentoring the peer role models, developing interdisciplinary project-based learning modules, and assessing the REALISE project. The fellow will be supervised most directly by a chemistry faculty member but will include close interactions with the Dean of the Artis College of Science and Technology, and other faculty and students from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
