The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites applications for Postdoctoral Research Associates in Discipline-Based Education Research under the direction of Dr. Marilyne Stains (https://sites.google.com/view/marilynestains/home).
The successful candidate(s) will primarily work on a NSF-funded research project (NSF CAREER #1552448) designed to characterize STEM faculty members' knowledge base for teaching, instructional practices, progressions of this knowledge and these practices over time, as well as influences of context on these progressions. Duties will include collecting, managing, and analyzing video tapes of STEM classrooms, course artifacts, interviews, and surveys. The candidate(s) will also have the opportunity to work on other NSF funded and non-funded projects.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: A Ph.D. degree in discipline-based education research (e.g., chemical education research, physics education research, engineering education research, or biology education research) or a Ph.D. in Science Education with a research focus on higher education instructional practices is required by the appointment start date. Effective oral and written communication skills are required. A record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed science education journals will be highly valued. Desirable qualifications include knowledge and application of best practices in higher education teaching, learning, and assessment, as well as experience with faculty development. The successful candidate(s) will have a substantial background in quantitative and/or qualitative research design and methods, be able to work independently, and multi-task. The successful candidate will be expected to help mentor undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory.
