Dear colleagues,
This is a call for abstracts for the symposium Discourse Frameworks in Active Learning Chemistry Classrooms which will take place this summer at the 2020 Biennial Conference on Chemical Education (BCCE) at Oregon State University (Corvallis, Oregon) from July 18th-23rd. Abstracts must be submitted by February 24th, 2020 for full consideration (https://bcce2020.org/call-for-abstracts/).
Symposium Description: Recent investigations of discourse patterns in active learning chemistry courses have provided novel insights into how students think, learn, and engage with each other, and how instructors might help support quality discourse in the classroom. Findings from these studies have informed instructional and curricular adaptations aimed at improving the quality of student discourse and student reasoning in these settings. This symposium will highlight the application of specific discourse frameworks for investigating unique research questions and contexts across K12 and higher education.
We welcome submissions that offer diverse perspectives on discourse across K12 and higher education chemistry classrooms including, but not limited to:
- Analyses of the prevalence of scientific arguments in collaborative learning environments
- Investigations of instructor/facilitator discursive moves on student conceptual development
- Analysis of discourse between instructors to promote improved classroom practice
- Comparisons of written discourse between English language learners and native English speaking students
- Evaluations of student-student discourse patterns in online chemistry courses
- Assessments of changes in classroom discourse as a function of curricular reform
