Dear CER Colleagues:
This is a request for colleagues at other universities in the US.
I am trying to gather information about policies that different universities have around the use of webcams during remote instruction – specifically some universities have enacted policies that instructors are not allowed to mandate the use of webcams in remote instruction. If you are at a university with a policy that does not allow mandated use of webcams, please could you send me a link to where I can locate that policy on your university’s website? Or if it’s not posted, could you share with me a policy document that was shared with you by your university?
Second, when webcams are not allowed, this means that artificial intelligence (AI)- or human-based proctoring of exams taken remotely cannot happen via webcams (unless the policy has an exception for exams). If your university is disallowing webcam usage mandates, what alternatives is your university promoting and supporting for instructors to conduct assessments, e.g., final exams? Please could you point me to a website at your university where these are listed?
Please send responses to me at hannah.sevian@umb.edu. Responses will be most helpful if you send them to me by August 22. I am most grateful for your help!
Thank you.
Hannah
